Chapter Sixteen
âTrouble seems to follow you,â Officer Thomas said, leaning heavily on the kitchen counter, his notepad in hand. A few years ago, this would have been the most upsetting and exciting thing to ever happen to them, now it was barely in the top five. Officer Thomas continued gravely. âAnother attack, another teacher. God, what the hell is happening?â
âOfficer Thomas, please do not⦠Oh, you know what? Swear all you like,â Clementine said. âI agree, this is madness. I feel like weâre all on a bus headed straight for the moon, or hell, or something.â
âIt really is.â Margery sat next to her at the kitchen breakfast bar, in the same spots as they had been earlier.
All the joviality had gone from the evening, swept away and replaced by fear. It did seem very unlikely now that Miss Macdonald had killed Mr Weaver as Dr Roberts had suggested, seeing as she had just been attacked by one of the masked strangers. Unless Miss Macdonald had been attacked by a copycat. But how many people would have known the connection between the strangers and their PE plimsols and Mr Evans? The police hadnât yet released that information in the hope that they could use it to catch the group. It didnât help that it was gone three in the morning and the police officers had waited to interview them last. Margery could barely keep her eyes open, they burned with exhaustion. The glove sat on the table in front of them in a plastic evidence bag, waiting to go away for DNA testing. Margery couldnât stop looking at it. It was a plain black leather glove, and it looked incredibly ordinary for something that had been worn while strangling another person.
âWell, it canât have been Mr Evans,â Clementine whispered, âheâs in custody.â
âHeâs not,â Officer Thomas said, not looking either of them in the eye. âWe had to release him yesterday. No evidence.â
âAre you joking?â Margery said, feeling her mouth drop open in horror. âSo he could have come here tonight.â
âWe couldnât keep him in any longer.â Officer Thomas looked as upset as she felt.
âOfficer Thomas?â Officer Symon had reappeared in the room.
âWhat is it, Symon?â Officer Thomas stood up from the chair immediately, his eyes scanning Symonâs face for information. Margery found herself leaning forward to listen.
âThe inspector wants to talk to you,â Officer Symon said. Officer Thomas raised his eyebrows and followed him out of the room, leaving them to their thoughts. Margery surveyed the half-finished buffet table and the disposable cups littering the kitchen. Through the utility-room door, she could see the party bags still lining the countertops. They sat for a while longer until it was clear that Officer Thomas wouldnât be coming back any time soon. Margery and Clementine turned to each other and exchanged a look that said more than words ever could have.
âCome on,â Clementine said, gesturing towards the living room. âLetâs go and see how Rose got on with her CCTV camera.â
Margery dragged herself from the stool and followed her through to the living room.
