Chapter Sixteen

‘Trouble seems to follow you,’ Officer Thomas said, leaning heavily on the kitchen counter, his notepad in hand. A few years ago, this would have been the most upsetting and exciting thing to ever happen to them, now it was barely in the top five. Officer Thomas continued gravely. ‘Another attack, another teacher. God, what the hell is happening?’

‘Officer Thomas, please do not… Oh, you know what? Swear all you like,’ Clementine said. ‘I agree, this is madness. I feel like we’re all on a bus headed straight for the moon, or hell, or something.’

‘It really is.’ Margery sat next to her at the kitchen breakfast bar, in the same spots as they had been earlier.

All the joviality had gone from the evening, swept away and replaced by fear. It did seem very unlikely now that Miss Macdonald had killed Mr Weaver as Dr Roberts had suggested, seeing as she had just been attacked by one of the masked strangers. Unless Miss Macdonald had been attacked by a copycat. But how many people would have known the connection between the strangers and their PE plimsols and Mr Evans? The police hadn’t yet released that information in the hope that they could use it to catch the group. It didn’t help that it was gone three in the morning and the police officers had waited to interview them last. Margery could barely keep her eyes open, they burned with exhaustion. The glove sat on the table in front of them in a plastic evidence bag, waiting to go away for DNA testing. Margery couldn’t stop looking at it. It was a plain black leather glove, and it looked incredibly ordinary for something that had been worn while strangling another person.

‘Well, it can’t have been Mr Evans,’ Clementine whispered, ‘he’s in custody.’

‘He’s not,’ Officer Thomas said, not looking either of them in the eye. ‘We had to release him yesterday. No evidence.’

‘Are you joking?’ Margery said, feeling her mouth drop open in horror. ‘So he could have come here tonight.’

‘We couldn’t keep him in any longer.’ Officer Thomas looked as upset as she felt.

‘Officer Thomas?’ Officer Symon had reappeared in the room.

‘What is it, Symon?’ Officer Thomas stood up from the chair immediately, his eyes scanning Symon’s face for information. Margery found herself leaning forward to listen.

‘The inspector wants to talk to you,’ Officer Symon said. Officer Thomas raised his eyebrows and followed him out of the room, leaving them to their thoughts. Margery surveyed the half-finished buffet table and the disposable cups littering the kitchen. Through the utility-room door, she could see the party bags still lining the countertops. They sat for a while longer until it was clear that Officer Thomas wouldn’t be coming back any time soon. Margery and Clementine turned to each other and exchanged a look that said more than words ever could have.

‘Come on,’ Clementine said, gesturing towards the living room. ‘Let’s go and see how Rose got on with her CCTV camera.’

Margery dragged herself from the stool and followed her through to the living room.
